My Journey to Malaysia: Discovering a New Home with MM2H
As a Dutch citizen, I've always been proud of our progressive society and the values we uphold. However, over the last few decades, I found myself somewhat disillusioned with the direction in which the country has been headed, both socially and politically. The stress of navigating through this changing landscape began to weigh on me a little. I found myself yearning for a change of scenery, perhaps a fresh start, one where I can look forward to new-found quality of life. And then I came across Malaysia's My Second Home visa, or
MM2H.
In short, it's been nothing short of a revelation.
Discovering Malaysia's Appeal
Now, truth be told, Malaysia had always been on my radar as a travel destination. Known for its stunning beaches, dense rainforests and mouthwatering cuisine, it'd been sitting on my bucket list for some time. However, I'd never really considered it as a place to settle down in. That is until I stumbled upon the MM2H visa. Then, the more I researched, the more I realized that Malaysia offers not just a tropical paradise, but also the stability and the lifestyle that align perfectly with what I was yearning.
The idea of living in a politically stable country, where the cost of living is significantly lower, where the sun shines almost year-round and where I can enjoy the outdoors to my heart's content, seemed incredibly appealing. Moreover, the multicultural fabric of Malaysia, with its harmonious blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and various indigenous cultures, resonated with me. It felt like a place where I could not only fit in but thrive.
Monetary Benefits and Tax Advantages
I have to be honest though, one of the most compelling aspects of the MM2H visa, for me, was the monetary benefits and tax breaks it offered. In my experience, it seemed that living comfortably in Holland, with its nose-bleed cost of living and ever-increasing tax rates, was getting more and more out of reach. The MM2H visa, on the other hand, promised a much more favourable financial environment. For one, Malaysia's cost of living is a fraction of what I was used to in Holland. From shelter to food, from healthcare to education, everything is so much more affordable, allowing me to stretch my disposable
and my discretionary income way, way further.
But it was the tax breaks that were the real game-changer. Malaysia offers a much lower taxes, with, for starters, no tax on foreign income for MM2H-holders. Additionally, there's no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax, for good measure. I daresay that this friendlier tax regime pretty much rendered the decision to apply for MM2H a no-brainer. Of course, the awesome Euro to Ringging exchange rate was ever so welcome too.
New Way of Life
Beyond the financial perks, what sealed the deal for me was the quality of life that Malaysia offers. The country's food culture is legendary, with an incredible variety of dishes that reflect its diverse population. From spicy Malay nasi goreng to Chinese dim sum, Indian roti canai and even Western fare, the culinary scene in Malaysia is a feast for the senses. And the best part? It's all incredibly affordable.
The people of Malaysia are another highlight. I found them to be kind-hearted, welcoming and affable. The strong sense of community, combined with the slower pace of life compared to Holland, made me feel like planting my roots here soon after arriving. And with a burgeoning expat community, including many Dutch, I knew I wouldn't be alone in my adventure. Plus, I love seeing the vestiges here and there of our shared Dutch/Malaysian history. Fascinating stuff.
Looking Forward
As I write this, I'm six months into my new life in Malaysia. I settled in Johor Bahru, a stone's throw away from Singapore, which means I get to hop across for some action-packed fun and recreation when I feel like it. But right now, here in JB, I'm living a life I could only dream of in Holland, surrounded by natural beauty, all the while enjoying a more languid daily pace. Frankly, MM2H has been the best decision I've ever made.
Malaysia's MM2H has given me the opportunity to live in a country that not only offers incredible benefits but also a sense of belonging that started to elude me back in Holland. For any fellow Dutch citizens considering a change of pace, or, better yet, an exciting re-boot, I can recommend looking into the
MM2H program.
